Town of Swampscott

Swampscott has a population of 15,111 (2020 census). It is governed by a Representative Town Meeting and a Select Board with 5 members. The Select Board serves as the appointing authority for the Town Administrator and numerous Town commissions, committees, and boards. It also serves as the Town’s licensing board and issues licenses in accordance with the General Laws and Town Bylaws. The Select Board is responsible for the preparation and approval of the final Town Meeting warrant and recommendations to Town Meeting for approval, disapproval or other appropriate action on each article contained in such warrant presented to Town Meeting.

Swampscott’s Town Meeting has 324 members. After redistricting, one-third of the members are elected for 3 years, one third are elected for 2 years, and one-third are elected for 1 year. Thereafter, until the next redistricting, 18 members are elected from each of the 6 precincts, for 3 year terms. For more information, see Swampscott’s Town Meeting Guide (pdf).

Officials elected to Boards and to Standing Committees typically are elected with staggered terms, so not all members are elected at the same time. Elected officials include:
