Town of Essex

Located 26 miles north of Boston, the Town of Essex has a population of 3,675 (2020 census). It is governed by a 3-member Board of Selectmen and an Open Town Meeting. A Town Moderator works for the selectmen and oversees day-to-day operations. The Town Meeting is the legislative branch and has the power to make local laws (bylaws) and the power to approve the Town budget of expenditures and the method for paying for them.

The Town Clerk's responsibilities include the maintenance of voter lists and registrations, and planning and managing elections and certifying poll results. Elected officials include members of the following: Board of Assessors, Moderator, Board of Selectmen, Board of Health, Constables, Regional School Committee, Board of Library Trustees, Essex Housing Authority, and Planning Board.
