North Shore Volunteering

Democratic City and Town Committees work with and support many organizations with democratic values. In recent years, North Shore Democrats have supported the following organizations, among others, in addition to local organizations in their cities and towns.

Environmental Voter Project

The Environmental Voter Project identifies millions of non-voting environmentalists and turns them into consistent voters. We estimate that over 8 million environmentalists did not vote in the 2020 presidential election and over 12 million skipped the 2018 midterms. We are a nonpartisan nonprofit focused on a simple, high-leverage solution to this problem: with a 6-year track record of success, we are accurately identifying these non-voting environmentalists and efficiently converting them into a critical mass of consistent voters that will soon be too big for politicians to ignore.

Grandmothers For A Brighter Future

Grandmothers for a Brighter Future began as Grandmothers for Obama. Launched in 2008, we soon grew to 13 groups in a handful of states. In 2012, we had writers in 25 states plus the District of Columbia. We focused on the Presidency, and some of us also worked on races in our own states. In 2016, we once again focused on the Presidency and on selected races for the U. S. Senate, and, in 2018, joined the effort to flip the Senate. We currently have writers in 46 states plus D. C. We are all volunteer and self-financed locally, and thus not a PAC.

Our model has been tested repeatedly. We develop a timely message in the form of a postcard template which we send to Grandmothers’ group leaders and those working individually. We also provide a list of names and addresses of targeted voters, many of them older women, to whom our volunteers will send the cards. Participating Grandmothers print the cards on canary yellow card stock, add a short, handwritten note, and sign, stamp, and mail them.

If you share our vision and our perspective, please sign up. We welcome and need your thoughts and efforts. We are fortunate to have politically savvy women to work with, and we really mean it when we say we look forward to hearing from you.

NAACP, North Shore Branch

The North Shore MA NAACP Branch was born out of the Black Lives Matter protests that occurred after George Floyd’s murder in May 2020, which motivated people in the community to form the Hamilton-Wenham Human Rights Coalition. Original members of this group sought to form a local NAACP branch, to institute immediate political, state and federal impact on important social justice issues, and to support the oldest civil rights organization in the country. Today, our membership stands in active solidarity against systemic racism in the North Shore, MA.

We were chartered in July 2020 by the National Office and have been working to build a strong presence in our jurisdiction of the North Shore MA. All Voting is Local

The freedom to vote is at the heart of our democracy. All Voting is Local exists to expose and dismantle threats to voter freedom. Even though major elections happen only every two to four years, state and local officials consider and make decisions surrounding our ability to vote year-round. These constant threats to voting access and freedoms require immediate action.

We work on the ground in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, building bridges with election officials to expand access to the ballot. We work with partners to advance fair, inclusive rules on voter registration, to remove barriers that make it more difficult for people to vote, and to ensure every vote counts.

Instead of letting state and local officials strip away—unchecked—our ability to vote, every day we rise in our power to be proactive, not reactive. Our work is nonpartisan and focuses on three areas to ensure that the right to vote belongs to us all: registration and voting, growing grassroots power, and vote count and certification.

Support Black-Owned Businesses: 450+ Places to Start Online

While the economic challenges of the last few years have tested organizations of all stripes, Black-owned businesses closed their doors at twice the rate of other businesses during the pandemic. Studies show that less access to the financial system and lack of family wealth to draw from—both key avenues of financial security during economic slowdowns—are partly to blame.

Consumer spending habits are another major challenge for Black-owned businesses, which can struggle to scale up because of a misperception that their target market is a narrow demographic. Minority-owned businesses, however, are often marketing to broader audiences who never consider them. In order to contribute to the advancement of Black-owned enterprises in the United States, UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands, I have assembled an extensive roster of more than 450 Black-owned businesses spanning various sectors. Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE)

Launched in 2020, the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE) was founded by Heidi Beirich and Wendy Via to address the gap in efforts to stop transnational hate and far-right extremism movements, particularly U.S.-based activity that is exported to other countries and across borders.

Heidi and Wendy are both veterans of the Southern Poverty Law Center, one of the most prestigious civil rights organizations in the U.S., where they worked for nearly two decades on the pressing civil and human rights issues of our time, specifically the white supremacy-based hate and extremism that affects people’s and communities’ daily lives and infiltrates our public systems.

GPAHE tackles the issue of hate and extremism by working to reduce the associated violence that terrorizes communities and our society and tackling systemic problems rooted in hate in our governments and societies. As we’ve seen in recent years in the U.S., as well as in countries around the world, we can no longer separate hate and extremism from our leaders and politics.

Let America Vote

Extreme voter suppression laws that disproportionately impact people based on their race or ethnicity, gender, age, or income are popping up all over the country at an alarming pace. If we don’t fight back, more and more Americans will become disenfranchised and lose their voice in our democracy.

Over the past decade, momentum on voting rights has gone dangerously in the wrong direction. We started Let America Vote to fight back against proposals across the country that make it harder for eligible voters to exercise their constitutional right to cast a ballot.

We believe that supporting local movement vote groups is the most effective and most cost-effective strategy to transform our country.

MoveOn

MoveOn.org is a joint Web site for two separate organizations: MoveOn.org Civic Action and MoveOn.org Political Action. MoveOn.org Civic Action is a 501(c)(4) organization which primarily focuses on nonpartisan education and advocacy on important national issues. MoveOn.org Political Action is a federal political committee which primarily helps members elect candidates who reflect our values through a variety of activities aimed at influencing the outcome of the next election.

MoveOn members are a force for social justice and political progress. We come from all 50 states and all walks of life. Our rapid-response organizing and campaigning, communications interventions, digital innovation, rigorous data science and testing, and culture of grassroots participation have repeatedly combined to produce real-world impact, changing outcomes and making our country better. MoveOn members have been at the forefront of the resistance as Trump and his Republican Party tried to take away health care from tens of millions, cut taxes for corporations and billionaires, separated immigrant families and caged children, given polluters free rein, attacked women, people of color, Muslims, immigrants, LGBTQ Americans, working families, and other communities, and made war more likely. Through mass mobilizations, rapid-response actions, phone calls and emails to Congress, digital activism, and other strategic interventions, we have limited the harm done by Trump.

MoveOn.org Political Action is focused on running powerful progressive advocacy campaigns and demonstrating MoveOn members’ power at the ballot box. In contrast to most PACs which funnel industry contributions to candidates in exchange for access, MoveOn.org Political Action bundles hundreds of thousands of small donations together to elect progressive candidates who will represent the American people.

National Security Leaders for America (NSL4A)

We are a 501(c)(4) bipartisan organization made up of individuals who served in a variety of senior leadership positions that include all six military branches, elected federal and state offices, and various government departments and agencies. We dedicate ourselves to supporting individuals of the highest integrity willing to serve in positions of government trust and to promoting public education about our democracy and the institutions upon which it depends.

NSL4A evolved from National Security Leaders for Biden (NSL4B), which stood up during the 2020 elections to enable its members to advocate for presidential nominee Joe Biden. This effort initially focused on its members’ providing their individual voices through op-eds in the summer of 2020. In September 2020, NSL4B leveraged the collective voice of 489 signatories in a letter of public support for Joe Biden, which organically grew to 780 public members prior to election day.

During the 2022 Midterm elections, NSL4A endorsed 31 candidates in both federal and state level elections. These candidates ran against opponents who espoused anti-democracy positions such as voter suppression and election denialism. Our efforts supported the reelection of two state Governors, three U.S. Representatives, and four U.S. Senators, along with the election of two new state Governors, one new U.S. Representative, and one new U.S. Senator.

National Women’s Studies Association (NWSA)

Established in 1977, the National Women's Studies Association has as one of its primary objectives promoting and supporting the production and dissemination of knowledge about women and gender through teaching, learning, research and service in academic and other settings. Today the field’s interrogation of identity, power, and privilege go far beyond the category “woman." Drawing on the feminist scholarship of U.S. and Third World women of color, women’s studies has made the conceptual claims and theoretical practices of intersectionality, which examines how categories of identity (e.g., sexuality, race, class, gender, age, ability, etc.) and structures of inequality are mutually constituted and must continually be understood in relationship to one another.

Principles First

We are a nationwide grassroots movement of people who share a love of American democracy and concern for the direction of our existing conservative leadership. We’ve watched as institutions on the right have been hijacked or co-opted by bad-faith actors willing to put politics and personality over principle. And we’ve seen those in positions of leadership compromise themselves out of cynical self-interest. We believe good-faith Americans deserve something better.

We’re building an alternative to the partisan doom-loop. Principles First holds an annual Summit in Washington, D.C. to serve as an alternative to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC). We convene local chapters to effect change at the community level. We elevate principled leaders around the country. And we speak out as a voice of clarity at a time when cheap partisan tribalism has become the norm.

Run for Something

Run for Something will recruit and support young, diverse progressives to run for down-ballot races in order to build sustainable power for Democrats in all 50 states. We help people who are pro-choice, pro-universal health care, pro-LGBTQ equality, pro-criminal justice reform; pro-working families and organized labor, pro-voting rights, pro-campaign finance reform, who focus on inequality, fair wages, and job creation; who acknowledge that climate change is real, man-made, and our responsibility to fight; and who will fight to reduce gun violence in their community. That being said: We are NOT the purity police. A progressive in Louisiana is different than a progressive in California. We help candidates run for the places they’re in. Between 2017 and 2021, we elected 637 candidates to offices ranging from state legislator to county clerk, and everything in between. Our candidates come from all walks of life – teachers, doctors, activists, environmentalists, stay-at-home dads, librarians, college students – and they represent communities that have been historically excluded or discouraged from running for office.

Vote Save America

There are no off years.
The important work of political and civic engagement doesn’t just happen every two years — especially when Republican politicians across the country are threatening our most basic freedoms every day. Sign up today to stay engaged throughout 2023. We’ll keep you in the loop on the most important things you need to know and how to get involved.

What exactly is Vote Save America?
It’s a Web site, an initiative, and a community designed to help guide you with each step you need to take throughout the year to have the impact you want. We’ll help you not only get registered to vote and learn about candidates on your ballot, but also volunteer locally.

What’s next?
It’s 2023. Some people like to call that an Off Year, but we like to call it an opportunity. Meaningful change only comes about through year-round organizing, and through listening to voters even when there isn’t a major election coming up. That’s why we launched No Off Years, our plan to win in the 2023 state and local elections and start organizing ahead of 2024. That means voter registration. That means deep canvassing. That means funding year-round local organizations who know their communities best and building community among fellow volunteers.

It is the first organization of its kind and the largest, with over one and a half million supporters in all 50 states. VoteVets uses public issue campaigns to relentlessly lift up the voices of veterans on matters of national security, veterans’ care, and everyday issues that affect the lives of those who served, and their families.

VoteVets Action Fund is a 501c(4) organization, whose primary purpose is to advocate for issues that impact troops, veterans, and their families. VoteVets Action Fund focuses on matters including, but not limited to, foreign policy (including war-making policy), veterans’ unemployment, robust investment in care for veterans, energy security, protecting the rights of those who serve, and upholding the Constitution and democracy that every military member swore to uphold and protect.

More often than not, Veterans have a stake in the top issues of the day, and VoteVets Action Fund is committed to getting their voices heard on these issues. For that reason, we have and will continue to work with all progressive allies representing labor, immigration, civil rights and voting rights, gay and lesbian rights, environmentalists, and other progressives, when their issues coincide with the needs of troops and veterans.
