Thirty-four U.S. Senate seats will be decided in the coming November 5 election. The Senate currently has 51 Democrats (including the 3 Independents) and 49 Republicans. With Joe Manchin (D) retiring, the Republicans almost certainly will pick up a seat in West Virginia. The margin for Democrats to maintain control of the Senate could not be slimmer.
It may come down to the election results in 9 states. Michigan, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Wisconsin have Democratic Senators and are considered “leaning Democratic.” Montana, Ohio, and Arizona also have Democratic Senators, but they are considered “toss-ups.” Texas and Florida have Republican Senators and are considered “leaning Republican,” but Democrats may have a shot.

Ruben Gallego earned his bachelor's degree in international relations from Harvard University. He served in the United States Marine Corps in Iraq. Before holding elected office, Gallego served as vice chair of the Arizona Democratic Party and as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention.

Democratic Senator Laphonza Butler, who was appointed by Governor Newsom after Diane Feinstein died on September 29, 2023, is not running in the November 5, 2024, election. Democratic U.S. Congressman Adam Schiff is running against Republican Steve Garvey. Unfortunately, two exceptional congresswomen, Katie Porter and Barbara Lee, will lose their congressional seats as they instead chose to run in the Senate primary. California is a a heavily Democratic state and Adam Schiff is heavily favored to wih a Senate seat in November.
Adam Schiff was born in Framingham, Massachusetts. Schiff earned a B.A. from Stanford University in 1982 and a J.D. from Harvard University in 1985. His career experience includes working as a prosecutor with the Office of the United States Attorney for the Central District of California. Schiff was a state senator from 1996 to 2000 and has served in the U.S. House since 2001. Schiff is running on his record in Congress, citing his role as impeachment manager in Donald Trump's impeachment and his efforts to lower prescription drug costs and build affordable housing.[

Angus King served as governor of Maine from 1995 to 2003.
King is one of two independent senators who caucuses with the Democrats in the Senate. A Democratic National Committee resolution calling on King and fellow independent Sen. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) to affiliate with the Democratic Party was defeated on October 20, 2017.
As of a 2014 analysis of multiple outside rankings, King is a more moderate left of center Democratic Party vote. As a result, he may break with the Democratic Party line more than his fellow members.

Before she ran for public office, Alsobrooks was an assistant state's attorney in Prince George's County, where she handled domestic violence cases.

Klobuchar was born in 1960 and grew up in Plymouth, Minnesota. She earned her B.A. graduating magna cum laude from Yale University in 1982, and she received her J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1985. While attending Yale, Klobuchar interned for Vice President Walter Mondale (D).
Prior to running for public office, Klobuchar was a partner at the law firms of Dorsey & Whitney and Gray Plant Mooty.[2] She was elected Hennepin County attorney in 1998 with 50.4 percent of the vote and re-elected in 2002 with no opposition.[3] She served as county attorney until 2006, the year she was first elected to the U.S. Senate.
Klobuchar won that election with 58 percent of the vote, and she was re-elected with over 60 percent support in 2012 and 2018. In 2014, Senate Democrats elected Klobuchar as chair of the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee, which works with advocacy groups, policy experts, and intergovernmental organizations to shape policy positions.

Democrat Ty Pinkins is running in the general election. He was born in Rolling Fork, Mississippi. Pinkins served in the U.S. Army from 1996 to 2017. He earned a bachelor's degree in political science and government from the University of Maryland Global Campus in 2012, a juris doctor from Georgetown University in 2020, and a master's degree in national security law from Georgetown University in 2021. Pinkins' career experience includes owning a business and working as an attorney with the Mississippi Center for Justice and a presidential communications aide with the White House Communications Agency.

Democrat Lucas Kunce is facing incumbent Republican Senator Josh Hawley in the general election. Hawley may be best known for his fist-pumping encourgement of the January 6 MAGA insurrectionists, and his later running from the MAGA mob when they stormed the Capital.
Lucas Kunce was born in Missouri. He attended Yale on a Pell Grant, then obtained a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Missouri School of Law. In 2007, he joined the United States Marine Corps as a judge-advocate (military lawyer). He served a tour in Iraq and two tours in Afghanistan. After returning to the United States, he served as the International Negotiations Officer on the Joint Staff of the Pentagon, where he represented the U.S. in arms control negotiations with Russia and NATO. He joined the Council on Foreign Relations in June 2017. In 2020, he left active duty and he joined the American Economic Liberties Project as director of national security. He continues to serve in the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

Incumbent Democratic Senator Jon Tester is running for re-election. He is opposed by Republican Tim Sheehy.
Tester was born in Havre, Montana, near the town of Big Sandy, Montana, on the land that his grandfather homesteaded in 1916.[3] In 1978, he graduated from the University of Great Falls with a B.S. in music. He then worked for two years as a music teacher in the Big Sandy School District before returning to his family's farm and custom butcher shop.
He was first elected to the Senate in 2006 with a margin of victory of less than 1 percent over Republican incumbent Sen. Conrad Burns. He most recently won re-election in 2018 in a state that voted for President Donald Trump by more than 20 points. Tester, who described himself as a moderate in a post-election interview with MSNBC host Rachel Maddow, said he won by localizing the race and discussing the cost of healthcare, access to public lands, veterans, and the cost of higher education.
Prior to his election to the Senate, Tester was a member of the Montana State Senate from 1999 to 2006. He served as Senate president from 2005 to 2006. He has been Senator since January 3, 2007.

Incumbent Republican Senator Pete Ricketts, appointed by Governor Jim Pillen when Senator Ben Sasse vacated his seat, is running in a special election to fill the remaining time in the term that ends on January 3, 2027.
Democrat Preston Love, Jr. is running in this general election. He received a bachelor's in economics from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and a graduate degree in professional studies from Bellevue University. His career experience includes working as an author, speaker, and adjunct professor. Love Jr. is the founder of the nonprofit Black Votes Matter Institute of Community Engagement. As of 2024, Love Jr. was affiliated with Antioch Church of God in Christ.

The election will fill the Senate seat held by Bob Menendez Sr. (I), who first took office in 2006. On July 23, 2024, Menendez announced his resignation from the U.S. Senate effective August 20, 2024, and withdrew from this race.
Democrat Andrew Kim will face Republican Curtis Bashaw in the general election. Kim is a member of the U.S. House, representing New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District. He assumed office on January 3, 2019. Prior to his election, Kim worked as a national security advisor under President Barack Obama (D). Kim worked in the White House from 2013 to 2015. He worked in the Office of the Secretary of Defense in 2013. He was also a foreign affairs officer with the U.S. Department of State from 2009 to 2013.

He was appointed in 2006 to be New Mexico’s Natural Resources Trustee, spent four years on the Albuquerque City Council, and represented New Mexico's 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House from 2009 to 2013. Sanders was born in 1941 in Brooklyn, New York, where he grew up. He earned his B.A. in political science from the University of Chicago in 1964 and went on to lecture at Harvard University and Hamilton College in New York. Sanders has also worked as a carpenter and a journalist.
After spending six months in a kibbutz (a communal settlement) in Israel, Sanders moved to Vermont in 1968. In the 1970s, he ran unsuccessfully for governor of Vermont twice and for U.S. Senate twice as a Liberty Union Party candidate. He was elected mayor of Burlington as an independent in 1981, defeating Democratic incumbent Gordon Paquette by a margin of 10 votes, and he served as mayor until 1989. He was elected to the U.S. House in 1990, where he served until joining the U.S. Senate in 2007. Though Sanders has held elected office as an independent since 1981 and sought the Democratic nomination for president, he identifies as a democratic socialist.
