Control of the House is On The Line

All 435 seats in the House are up for election on November 5, 2024. According to the Cook Report, 22 seats are toss ups, meaning they are competitive and either party has a good chance of winning. Eleven toss up seats are currently held by Democrats, and eleven toss ups seats are held by Republicans.

Following are the twenty-two seats considered “toss-ups.”

Arizona, AZ-01

The incumbent, Republican David Schweikert, is one of 147 Republicans who formally supported objection to counting Joe Biden’s electoral votes.

Democrat Amish Shah is facing Schweikert in the general election. Shah was a member of the Arizona House of Representatives, representing District 5, from January 9, 2023 until February 1, 2024.

Amish Shah was born in Chicago, Illinois. Shah earned a B.A. in economics from Northwestern University in 1997, an M.D. from Northwestern University in 2001, and an M.P.H. from the University of California at Berkeley in 2003. His career experience includes working as an attending physician with Mayo Clinic, Dignity Health, and IASIS Healthcare; the chief medical officer of Urgent Consult; and an airway management physician with the New York Jets.

Arizona, AZ-06

Democrat Kirsten Engel is running in the general election against Republican incumbent Juan Ciscomani.

Kirsten Engel graduated with honors from Brown University and Northwestern University’s School of Law, and later held positions at the Massachusetts Office of Attorney General and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Engel has served as a member of the Arizona House of Representatives and as a member of the Arizona State Senate. In 2022, she ran to represent Arizona’s 6th congressional district but lost to Juan Ciscomani (R) in a close election (49.2% vs. 50.7%).

California, CA-13

Incumbent: John Duarte (R)

Democrat Adam Gray is running in the general election against Republican incumbent John Duarte. Gray was a member of the California State Assembly, representing District 21. He assumed office on December 3, 2012, and left office on December 5, 2022.

Adam Gray was born in Merced, California. His career experience includes working as a legislative aide with the California State Legislature and as an assistant lecturer with the University of California at Merced.

Incumbent: David Valadao (R)

Democrat Rudy Salas is running in the general election against Republican incumbent David Valadao. He is campaigning on lowering drug costs, increasing public safety funding, clean water infrastructure, and expanding veterans’ and workers’ rights.

Salas earned a degree in political science and history from the University of California at Los Angeles in 2000. He served in the California Assembly from 2012 to 2022.

Incumbent Mike Garcia (R) is running for re-election. He is one of 147 Republicans who formally supported objection to counting Joe Biden’s electoral votes.

Democrat George Whitesides is running in the general election against Mike Garcia. Whitesides' career experience includes working as a NASA chief of staff and aerospace entrepreneur.

California, CA-41

Incumbent Ken Calvert (R) is running for re-election. He is one of 147 Republicans who formally supported objection to counting Joe Biden’s electoral votes.

Democrat Will Rollins is running in the general election against Republican incumbent Ken Calvert. Will was born in Torrance, California. He earned a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College in 2007 and a Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School in 2012. His career experience includes working as an assistant U.S. Attorney.

Colorado, CO-08

Democratic incumbent Yadira Caraveo graduated from Northglenn High School and earned a B.S. in biology from Regis University and an M.D. from the University of Colorado. Caraveo's career experience includes working as a pediatrician in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Thornton, Colorado.

Her organizational affiliations include serving as the assistant secretary of the Adams County Democratic Party, as a member of the Anythink Library System Board of Trustees, and as a board member for the Early Childhood Partnership of Adams County and the Colorado Behavioral Health Transformation Council.

Maine, ME-02

Democratic incumbent Jared Golden is running for re-election to the U.S. House to represent Maine's 2nd Congressional District. His election in 2018 was decided by ranked-choice voting. It was the first general election in Maine for which ranked-choice voting was law, and this race was the first in U.S. history where the process was used to decide a congressional election.

Prior to joining Congress, Golden served in the Maine House of Representatives, representing District 60 from 2014 to 2018.

Golden served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as a Marine. He graduated from Bates College, and he worked as a staffer for Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

In the general election, he'll face Republican Austin Thieriault.

Michigan, MI-07

Democratic incumbent Elissa Slotkin has declared her candidacy for the Senate seat occupied by Debbie Stabenow (D) who is retiring at the end of this term.

Democrat Curtis Hertel is running against Republican Tom Barrett and Libertarian L. Rachel Dailey.

Hertel earned his bachelor's degree in political science from the James Madison College at Michigan State University. In 2001, he was elected Ingham County Commissioner, and he served until 2008. During that time, he served as Constituent Relations Director for the House Democratic Caucus. He was elected as the Ingham County Register of Deeds, and held office from 2008 to 2012. Hertel was a member of the Michigan State Senate, representing District 23, from 2015 through 2022.

For six years, Hertel worked for the Department of Community Health. He also served as the Department’s legislative liaison. Hertel is the president of the Michigan Association of Register of Deeds, a member of the Sierra Club and member of the local Rotary Club.

Michigan, MI-08

Incumbent: Dan Kildee (D) is not seeking re-election.

Democrat Kristen McDonald Rivet is running against Republican Paul Junge.

Kristen McDonald Rivet lives in Bay City, Michigan.[1] Rivet earned a bachelor's degree in history from Michigan State University in 1992 and a master's degree in education and public administration from the University of Michigan at Flint.[2] Her career experience includes working as the vice president of Michigan Future, Inc., the president and CEO of Greater Midland, Inc., and the vice president of program and policy of The Skillman Foundation. Rivet served on the Bay City Commission and as the chief strategy officer of the Michigan Health Improvement Alliance. Kristin is a member of the Michigan State Senate.

New Jersey, NJ-07

Incumbent: Thomas Kean Jr. (R)

Susan Altman is the Democratic challenger. She played college basketball at Columbia University and professional basketball abroad, earned two graduate degrees from Oxford University in the UK—one in International Policy and the other in Business. For the last several years, Sue has served as Executive Director of the New Jersey Working Families Alliance, a non-profit organization focused primarily on combating political corruption in Trenton.

Incumbent: Anthony D’Esposito (R)

Laura Gillen is the Democratic challenger. She graduated from Georgetown University and later earned a degree from New York University's School of Law. She was the Hempstead Town Supervisor from 2018 to 2020. She has worked as an attorney and as an adjunct law professor at Hofstra University.

Gillen's campaign manager said, Laura has a strong record as supervisor of fighting corruption, protecting the environment, and working to lower costs for Long Island families. Laura will be campaigning around the district highlighting her past work and how she’ll work in Congress on the issues that matter most.

New York, NY-17

Republican Incumbent Mike Lawler is running for re-election.

Democrat Mondaire Jones is running in the general election against Lawler.

Mondaire Jones was born in Nyack, New York. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University in 2009 and a J.D. from Harvard University Law School in 2013.  Jones’ career experience includes working with the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Legal Policy, with Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP, and as an attorney with the Westchester County Law Department. He was a member of the U.S. House from January 3, 2021 to January 3, 2023.

Republican incumbent Marc Molinaro is running for re-election.

Democrat Josh Riley is running in the general election. Riley received a bachelor's degree from the College of William and Mary and a J.D. from Harvard University. Riley was a staff assistant to former Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-N.Y.), a policy analyst at the U.S. Department of Labor, a clerk on the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, and a general counsel to former Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) on the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. Riley worked for the law firms Boies, Schiller & Flexner and Jenner & Block LLP.

Incumbent: Gabriel Vasquez (D)

The Republican candidate is Yvette Herrell. She was one of 147 Republicans who formally supported objection to counting Joe Biden’s electoral votes.

Democrat Gabriel Vasquez (also known as Gabe) is a member of the U.S. House representing New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District. He assumed office on January 3, 2023, and is running for re-election.

Vasquez was born in and lives in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English and journalism from New Mexico State University in 2008. His career experience includes working as a journalist, working in public relations, as executive director of the Hispano Chamber of Commerce de Las Cruces, and as the field representative for U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM). Vasquez served as the district 3 city council for the City of Las Cruces.

Democratic incumbent Donald Davis (D) will be running against Republican Laurie Buckhout and Libertarian Tom Bailey.

Donald Davis was born in Snow Hill, North Carolina. Davis served in the United States Air Force and reached the rank of captain. He earned a B.S. in social sciences from the United States Air Force Academy, an M.S. in administration from Central Michigan University, an M.A. in sociology from East Carolina University, and an Ed.D. in educational leadership from East Carolina University. Davis' career experience includes working as a college instructor, admissions advisor, and lay minister.

Democratic incumbent Marcy Kaptur is running against Republican Derek Merrin.

Marcy Kaptur assumed office on January 3, 1983. During the 115th Congress, Kaptur was the longest-serving woman currently in Congress and the second-longest-serving women in congressional history. She served on House Appropriations Committee and was the ranking member of the Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee.

Kaptur was born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1946 and attended St. Ursula Academy. Kaptur received a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Wisconsin in 1968 and a master's in urban planning from the University of Michigan in 1974. Kaptur worked as an urban planner with the Toledo-Lucas County Plan Commissions from 1969 to 1975 before becoming director of planning at the National Center for Urban Ethnic Affairs from 1975 to 1977. Kaptur served as an urban policy advisor in the Jimmy Carter (D) administration from 1977 to 1979 and was pursuing a doctorate in urban affairs at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology when she first ran for election in 1982.

Democratic incumbent Emilia Sykes will be running against Kevin Coughlin (R) and Liam Walker (George Wallace Party) in the general election on November 5, 2024.

Emilia Sykes served as state House minority leader from 2019 to 2021. She was born in Akron, Ohio. Sykes earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Kent State University and a Juris Doctor and Master's degree in public health from the University of Florida. Her career experience includes working as an administrative staff advisor with the Summit County Fiscal Office and a law clerk to the chief justice of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Georgia.

Oregon, OR-05

Incumbent: Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R)

Democrat Janelle Bynum is running in the general election. She lives in Happy Valley, Oregon. Bynum earned a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Florida A&M University and an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan, Ross Business School. Her career experience includes working as a McDonald's franchise owner. Bynum volunteered with the Board of Trustees for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Oregon, Business Oregon, the Center for Women’s Leadership, and the Oregon Commission on Black Affairs.

Pennsylvania, PA-07

Democratic incumbent Susan Wild is running for re-election to represent Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District. She will be opposed by Ryan Mackenzie (Republican) and Lewis Shupe (Independent).

Prior to joining Congress, Wild was the solicitor of Allentown, Pennsylvania, from 2015 to 2017. She was also a partner with the firm Gross McGinley specializing in litigation, medical malpractice, and municipal law. Wild is the first woman to represent the Lehigh Valley in Congress.

Pennsylvania, PA-08

Democratic incumbent Matt Cartwright will be running against Republican Rob Bresnahan Jr. in the general election on November 5, 2024.

Cartwright graduated from Hamilton College in 1983 and then earned his J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. While an undergraduate, he studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and he met his future wife, Marion Munley.

After law school, he practiced law in Philadelphia for several years before relocating to Scranton to work with his father-in-law's firm. Prior to joining Congress, he worked as a lawyer with the firm Munley, Munley & Cartwright for 25 years.

Democratic incumbent Marie Gluesenkamp Pérez is running in the general election against Republican Joe Kent.

Pérez, who was born in Texas, lives in Skamania County, Washington. She earned a Bachelor's degree in economics from Reed College in 2012. Her career experience includes being a business owner.
